SMO and AFO

So Sean got measured and we ordered two items from our clinic from DAFO Cascade.

**** Update**** the SMO is for his left foot (unaffected) and the AFO is for the right foot the affected one)

We ordered the JumpStart Leap Frog which helps
moderate pronation or supination and associated gait instability.
open ankle trimline of this supramalleolar orthosis (SMO) allows free dorsiflexion (DF)-plantarflexion (PF) movement.

We also ordered the JumpStart Kangaroo which helps
moderate pronation, supination, toe walking and knee hyperextension.
proximal posterior upright on this ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) blocks PF.
anterior opening allows free DF. Posterior upright is meant to encourage lower leg to move away from it, into DF.
We also added more to his theratogs before he wore the top piece and the bottom piece we now have to tape a X on his tummy because he is not using his tummy muscles and hips and his rib cages are still way to high. I will try to get a picture of him with his tape later today.

Did you pick blue for the strap color? Cascade brand is supposed to be the best of the best. The girl I nanny for has always used cascade. She uses AFOs, they do great things for kids that use them.

They didn't ask me what color, but I am assuming it will be a boy color and not pink I hope. I will have to ask the therapist tomorrow and aquatic PT:)

Can't wait to see him wearing them. Now is the SMO for his non affective side and the AFO for his affected side? Or is one for night use and the other for day?

Yes the SMO is for lefty the unaffected and the AFO is for righty the affected:)

Erin...

We also ordered from Cascade, and Leah wears a SMO on her right and an AFO on her left (effected). They have been doing amazing things for her, so hopefully they will be great for Sean!

Also, I'm certain with Cascade you get to design it! Make sure you ask about it, because I'm sure Sean would love to pick out the patterns (I think they have a sports themed one and a dinosaur one).

Let's get together soon! Things have calmed down a ton and I'd love to see you guys again!

Hi there,
I just came across your blog and wanted to say hello. My son Daniel is also a stroke survivor. He is 4 years old, has "mild" left - sided hemi, and is a very bright and active boy nonetheless. Anyway, we've used the Jumpstart SMO's, and I speak very highly of them. Daniel used to have a custom - made SMO, and I'm sure you know how EXPENSIVE they are! The Fast Fit ones are EXACTLY the same as the custom - made ones, only they're $50 versus $700. Yeah, that was a pricey lesson to learn! Anyway, I hope Sean does well with the new SMO/AFO - good luck!
